The Biology Department provides graduate programs leading to both M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees, with a thesis requirement. Students in these programs must complete coursework, typically chosen from Biology Department offerings, though courses from other university departments or institutions may be approved by their advisory committee. A minimum of two courses must be selected from the Biology Department's catalog. All graduate students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module, an online course to be finished within the initial eight weeks of their first term, which will appear on their academic record. The Integrity Office will notify students to complete this module, distinct from the mandatory Academic Integrity Workshop.
The interdisciplinary Collaborative Water Program encourages comprehensive approaches to water-related studies. This distinctive initiative enables Biology Department students to pursue specialized training while collaborating with peers from diverse academic backgrounds through core interdisciplinary courses. Jointly administered by 11 departments and schools across the University of Waterloo's six faculties, with coordination by the Water Institute, the program equips students to tackle complex water challenges through interdisciplinary teamwork. Graduates emerge as future water sector leaders, skilled in cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration within interdisciplinary water-focused teams.
