The Biology Department provides thesis-focused graduate programs for both M.Sc. (Master of Science) and Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) degrees. Both programs mandate coursework, typically chosen from Biology Department offerings, though students may select approved courses from other university departments or institutions. A minimum of two required courses must be from the Biology Department's catalog. All graduate students must complete the Graduate Academic Integrity Module, an online course to be finished within the initial 8 weeks of the first term, which appears on academic transcripts. The Integrity Office will notify students about this requirement, distinct from the mandatory Academic Integrity Workshop.
Bioinformatics research encompasses protein folding studies, DNA/protein sequence analysis methods, and evolutionary/ecosystem modeling. Contemporary evolutionary biology frequently involves computational genome sequence analysis. Systematics (formerly taxonomy) now also depends significantly on bioinformatics approaches.
