The Master of Science in Bioinformatics is a cross-disciplinary program applying computational approaches to handle and examine biological information. This involves using computers to structure experimental results into databases, create novel algorithms and tools, and employ these resources to transform raw data into biologically significant insights. For a decade, our M.Sc. program has equipped students with skills to systematize, represent, process, and derive conclusions from biological datasets. Learners benefit from interactions with globally recognized bioinformatics experts at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the BC Cancer Agency, while gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies to refine their expertise.
This M.Sc. program in Bioinformatics bridges academic disciplines including computer science, statistics, molecular biology, and biotechnology with clinical research teams at healthcare facilities. The unique collaboration between the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and the BC Cancer Agency provides students with direct access to leading bioinformatics specialists, engagement in pioneering research, and chances to tackle authentic bioinformatics challenges. Internship opportunities enable students to work across Canadian and global academic institutions, research centers, and industries, strengthening ties within Canada's high-tech research community across both commercial and government sectors. Past students have conducted research at prestigious international locations including the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines and Mexico, Moscow's Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Cambridge's European Bioinformatics Institute, Singapore's National University, and Japan's National Institute of Genetics.
Applicants must have a Life-Sciences degree, with significant experience in a quantitative science OR a Computer Science/Math/Engineering/Physics degree with significant experience in Life Sciences. Although work experience may be taken into consideration if the degree is outside these areas.
