Our curriculum highlights core competencies in social theory and research methodologies, while faculty and student research expands knowledge in key focus areas: Crime, Law, and Security; Knowledge, Education, and Digital Culture; Migration, Borders, and Transnationalism; and Social Inequality and Public Policy. Our academic work enables individuals to better comprehend their societal roles, navigate complex social, political, economic, and cultural landscapes, and appreciate diverse viewpoints. Waterloo's Sociology Department fosters a welcoming, collaborative atmosphere that nurtures learning and develops analytical skills to address contemporary societal challenges. Our engaging graduate programs (MA and PhD) enhance students' grasp of social, political, economic, and cultural dynamics through sociological frameworks, critical thinking, and cross-disciplinary research. We offer coursework and research opportunities in law and crime studies, social inequalities and policy, migration patterns, governance systems, and cultural-educational studies.
The MA program offers flexible full-time or part-time enrollment with thesis, major research paper, or coursework-only options. Completion typically requires 3 to 8 academic terms, varying by degree path and co-op selections.
