Welcome to the Master of Arts in Intercultural German Studies at Waterloo. This webpage serves as a resource for graduate students enrolled in our joint degree program, offering essential guidance and details. A comprehensive program handbook can be provided upon request. Through this unique international MA program, you'll earn a single degree jointly conferred by both the University of Waterloo and Universität Mannheim, granting you equivalent academic recognition across Europe and North America. Distinct from typical exchange programs, this represents Canada's inaugural transatlantic joint humanities degree. The curriculum is designed to cultivate the language proficiency, research capabilities, and intercultural competencies needed to thrive in our modern global knowledge economy. The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies provides undergraduate and graduate programs in German and Russian (BA, MA, PhD), along with courses in Croatian and Dutch. Additionally, we collaborate with the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies to offer a minor in Cultural Identities. As host to one of Canada's most extensive and varied German programs, our department is at the forefront of promoting German and Slavic cultures nationwide. Our distinguished faculty specialize in diverse areas including second language education, applied linguistics, and literary, film, and cultural studies.

Students whose native language is neither English nor German and who have not taken their first degree in a program taught in either language will have their language skills assessed by the admitting university.
