Geography is a multifaceted field that examines both natural and human-made environments across various scales, from local communities to the entire planet. From addressing climate change crises and exploring socioeconomic connections to monitoring environmental transformations and advancing mapping technologies, Geography connects the social sciences (human geography), geospatial technologies (geomatics), and earth sciences (physical geography) to develop sustainable approaches to global challenges. If you seek a foundational discipline providing practical experience, analytical skill-building, and a holistic viewpoint essential for solving today's pressing ecological and sustainability issues, look no further. Our Department provides undergraduate programs (B.E.S.), a Master of Climate Change degree (M.C.C.), research-based graduate degrees (M.E.S., M.A., M.Sc.), and doctoral studies (Ph.D.).
The University of Waterloo's Department of Geography and Environmental Management ranks among the world's top 100 Geography programs and holds 5th place nationally in Canada. With 35 faculty members specializing in diverse areas of human geography, physical geography, geomatics, and aviation, we foster extensive academic expertise. At the graduate level, we partner with Wilfrid Laurier University's Geography and Environmental Studies department, creating the collaborative "Waterloo-Laurier Graduate Program in Geography," which combines the strengths of both institutions. Students can pursue three thesis-based master's programs (MA, MES, MSc) or three course-based degrees (MA, MES, MCC). The program encourages interdisciplinary exploration through connections with specialized labs, research groups, centers like the Collaborative Water Program, and cross-disciplinary study options. Qualification Requirements
An undergraduate honours degree or equivalent with at least a 75% average. Normally, the undergraduate degree will be in Geography, but applications are welcomed from superior students regardless of background. However, students must demonstrate that they have the necessary background to pursue graduate work in their field of specialization.
Please note that a supervisor is required for admission and supervisors are not assigned in the Department of Geography. Full agreement from a faculty member to supervise prior to initiating the application process is not necessary, however it is strongly recommended to contact professors to discuss the possibility of supervision and funding in order to better inform your decision whether or not to apply.
