Management sciences is an expansive, multidisciplinary field focused on solving problems and making decisions within organizations. It blends analytical modeling with behavioral science approaches to tackle society's most challenging issues. Students gain expertise in supply chain operations and optimization techniques while also exploring emerging areas like human-computer interaction, sustainable energy solutions, and entrepreneurial innovation. The program features three primary specialization tracks, allowing both students and faculty to tailor their learning and research to align with their passions and career aspirations. Undergraduate options include a dedicated management engineering degree or a management sciences concentration for students in other engineering disciplines. Following Waterloo's distinctive approach, all undergraduates participate in cooperative education, completing up to six 4-month work placements alternating with academic terms. This hands-on experience enhances classroom instruction, delivering a comprehensive, real-world education.
The Ph.D. program in Management Sciences caters to graduate students with deep research interests in the field. Doctoral candidates complete specialized coursework (adjusted for previous studies), pass rigorous comprehensive examinations, and produce an original dissertation. Typically, students finish this intensive program in four to five years of dedicated study.
