Chemistry encompasses a broad spectrum of study, examining the materials that compose our daily experiences – from what we observe and consume to what we sense and interact with. Waterloo's Chemistry programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels balance theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, equipping students for evolving professional pathways. Potential career trajectories include investigating the origins of debilitating illnesses, creating pharmaceutical treatments for cancer, or evaluating ecological impacts. The University of Waterloo, which houses the Institute for Quantum Computing, provides graduate students with exceptional chances to participate in cutting-edge quantum information research through various specialized projects and advanced coursework covering quantum information theory, applications, and implementation. Notably, Waterloo features a distinctive interdisciplinary graduate program in Quantum Information leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. The Ph.D. curriculum mandates passing two quantum information graduate courses, including QIC 710 and QIC 750 if not completed during the student's M.Sc. studies. Chemistry students must fulfill two graduate-level Chemistry course requirements, which can include QIC courses administered by the Chemistry Department. Should a student enroll in a QIC course outside the Chemistry Department, an additional Chemistry graduate course becomes necessary. Ph.D. candidates must additionally present a seminar at IQC, deliver a Quantum Information-focused presentation for the Chemistry Department, pass an oral comprehensive examination, and produce an innovative Quantum Information research dissertation.
