Biology explores living organisms, examining their structure, functions, organization, origins, and evolutionary development.
Pursuing biology opens doors to diverse career paths, from lab and field research to environmental analysis, healthcare, education, and industrial applications. While our specialization tracks (discontinued after Fall 2020) in Animal Physiology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, or Plant Biology previously helped students tailor their studies, our program still equips you for these dynamic professional paths.
Our flexible Biology curriculum lets you combine core studies in Genetics, Cell Biology, Physiology, Ecology, Plant Biology, and Human Anatomy with electives from arts, humanities, languages, and mathematics. Practical learning comes alive through laboratory sessions, tutorials, and field excursions across biological disciplines.
Investigate life in all its forms - from microscopic cellular structures to entire ecosystems. Biology has yielded groundbreaking scientific achievements like human genome sequencing, DNA structure identification, and photosynthesis mechanisms. These breakthroughs emerged when curious researchers approached nature with fresh perspectives. At Waterloo, you'll immerse yourself in biological studies immediately, choosing from over 80 specialized courses spanning microbiology, genetics, botany, and zoology. Whether you're drawn to laboratory work, environmental studies, healthcare, education, or industry, our program prepares you thoroughly. Co-op students gain additional advantage with up to two years of paid professional experience. Develop practical expertise through field courses in diverse environments like Algonquin Park or Jamaican marine ecosystems. Connect with fellow biology enthusiasts through the Biology Undergraduate Society (BUGS), which facilitates academic networking, peer tutoring, and social gatherings.
