For centuries, philosophy has formed a cornerstone of liberal arts education—and rightfully so. No other field cultivates critical thinking skills quite like it. Philosophy also serves as a perfect complement to scientific and mathematical studies. At Waterloo's Philosophy program, you'll examine timeless questions about human existence, master formal logic principles, and use philosophical methods to analyze contemporary issues. You'll even get to put these skills into practice during co-op experiences. After graduation, numerous paths open up. Philosophy provides exceptional preparation for legal careers and equips you for virtually any profession requiring broad perspective, attentive reading, detailed evaluation, and persuasive reasoning. The undergraduate curriculum covers all major philosophical traditions while focusing on specific concentrations—including language studies, logic and metaphysics, philosophy of mind and cognitive science, ethical and political philosophy, plus philosophy of science and mathematics.
