For centuries, philosophy has formed a cornerstone of liberal arts education—and rightfully so. No other field cultivates critical thinking skills quite like it. Philosophy also serves as a perfect complement to mathematics and scientific studies. Waterloo's Philosophy program immerses you in timeless human questions, introduces formal logic foundations, and shows how to apply philosophical thinking to contemporary issues and news. You'll even get to put these skills into practice during co-op terms. After graduation, numerous paths open up. Philosophy provides exceptional preparation for legal careers and proves equally valuable for any profession requiring broad perspective, attentive reading, detailed evaluation, and persuasive reasoning. The undergraduate curriculum covers all major philosophical traditions while focusing on key specialties—linguistics, logic and metaphysics, philosophy of mind and cognitive science, ethics and political philosophy, plus philosophy of science and mathematics.
