Explore music through a program designed to adapt to your creative interests. At Waterloo, you can receive training on over 20 instruments or develop your vocal skills. However, our offerings extend far beyond performance.Combine your studies in performance, music theory, and music history with innovative courses examining music's connections to technology, gender studies, and peace initiatives. Investigate the psychological aspects of music or explore diverse genres including pop, jazz, opera, and film scoring. This program provides the foundation for various career paths - whether you aspire to be a performer, composer, educator, audio engineer, or music software developer. Gain practical experience before graduation through our optional co-op program. The University of Waterloo's Music Department blends traditional musical training in performance, history, and theory with contemporary offerings like popular music studies, world music, music technology, music psychology, and sacred music. Our Music and Culture travel course includes educational trips to London, UK, and other significant locations. Flexible program options enable students to pair music studies with other disciplines, including our interdisciplinary Church Music and Worship Minor.

Nearly all music courses welcome students from every faculty. Prospective music majors typically enter the program in second year, evaluated on their first-year academic performance including multiple music courses. We recommend including performance-based Music studio courses during your first year, though studio course acceptance doesn't guarantee admission to the Music program. Our graduates pursue diverse paths including teaching (both institutional and private instruction), music-related entrepreneurship (retail, recording, publishing), specialized fields like music therapy, or advanced graduate studies in academic or performance disciplines. An honours undergraduate degree is generally required for further music education at the graduate level or in professional teaching programs.
