Our department focuses on researching language, applied linguistics, literature, and visual media studies. We maintain vibrant graduate and undergraduate programs in German studies, while also providing instruction in Croatian, Dutch, and Russian, along with interdisciplinary options such as a Cultural Identities minor. In today's globalized society, proficiency in foreign languages and cultural understanding offers significant advantages. At Waterloo, our German program extends beyond language instruction. Delve into German cultural studies, cinema, literary works, and linguistics, or complement your studies with other Slavic language courses like Russian and Croatian - all enhanced by practical work experience through our co-op program. The linguistic abilities and intercultural awareness you gain during your studies will prove valuable across diverse career paths in education, business, and public service. Program features include: Small class sizes averaging 15 students. Our intimate learning environment ensures personalized attention, with a curriculum designed to support both academic growth and career preparation. The student-led German Society hosts regular cultural events including film screenings, discussions, and social gatherings. Immerse yourself in German culture through our study abroad programs at the University of Bamberg or University of Mannheim, with opportunities to earn a Global Experience Certificate through our travel scholarship program.
