The Honours Visual Culture program explores the significant impact of visual culture on society and cultural development. This interdisciplinary curriculum emphasizes the historical and theoretical study of visual culture while acknowledging its expanding global reach and varied audience perspectives. The program features a core sequence of five visual culture courses, starting with foundational classes that examine art and film through the lens of visual perception (how we interpret our surroundings). Subsequent courses analyze visual culture through multiple disciplinary approaches and theoretical frameworks, culminating in an independent tutorial where students develop a senior thesis with faculty guidance. Students complement these core courses with at least 11 electives focusing on diverse visual culture topics, selected from over 100 options across 20+ university departments. Those pursuing the Honours Fine Arts – Visual Culture degree can further enrich their studies by taking an additional advanced course (VCULT 401) during their final year, extending their thesis research.
The Honours Fine Arts – Visual Culture program can be combined with most Arts honours majors or numerous honours programs in other faculties.
