The Honours Bachelor of Architectural Studies program equips students with essential skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience needed for advanced architectural training. While academically focused, this pre-professional curriculum immerses students in design culture and practice. Design is inherently integrative, demanding a comprehensive education to effectively address individual and societal needs. Students gain insights into societal structures, cultural dynamics, physics fundamentals, construction materials and methods, human-environment interactions, historical developments, analytical thinking, and various creative disciplines. At one of North America's leading architecture schools, you'll receive a well-rounded education spanning technical construction knowledge to cultural studies, sustainable design, and beyond—all enhanced by paid co-op opportunities. The program's heart lies in its design curriculum, beginning in first year with dedicated studio space for developing concepts through practical projects. Explore societal frameworks, physical principles, construction methodologies, environmental relationships, critical analysis, and artistic forms—all within Cambridge's historic setting, 30 km south of Waterloo's main campus, featuring specialized labs, exhibition spaces, and an exceptional design library.
Waterloo's approach situates architecture within broader urban and landscape contexts, teaching students to understand complex systems from city structures to settlement patterns. The curriculum integrates urban and landscape design principles with ecological considerations, offering immersive experiences through the signature Rome program and advanced global cities courses. These international electives enable firsthand study of architectural and urban developments across Europe, Asia, and South America, making global perspectives an integral part of architectural education.
