The Honours Bachelor of Architectural Studies program equips students with essential skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience needed for advanced professional architecture studies. While academically focused, this pre-professional curriculum immerses students in design culture and practice. Design is inherently integrative, demanding a comprehensive education to effectively address individual and societal needs. Students gain insights into societal structures, cultural dynamics, physics fundamentals, construction materials and methods, human-environment interactions, historical evolution, critical analysis, and creative arts. At one of North America's leading architecture schools, you'll receive a well-rounded education spanning construction materials, cultural heritage, social frameworks, sustainable design, and beyond—all complemented by paid co-op opportunities. The program's cornerstone is its design curriculum, beginning in first year. You'll have exclusive access to a personal studio space where you'll refine your abilities through practical projects. Explore societal and cultural dimensions, physical principles, construction techniques, human-environment relationships, analytical thinking, and artistic expression—all within Cambridge's picturesque historic setting, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Waterloo's main campus, featuring state-of-the-art labs, exhibition spaces, and an exceptional design library.
Architecture's central component is its design curriculum, which draws from and reinforces other thematic areas. These design studios guide students through structured projects addressing practical, theoretical, and aesthetic aspects of architectural creation, building competence progressively. Projects evolve from basic building element studies to complex architectural systems, encompassing individual and collective housing solutions, natural and urban environment designs, building program development, typological studies, and urban planning. The culminating term synthesizes design, theory, technology, environmental considerations, and urban planning into a capstone project—the comprehensive building design and technical report.
