This MA program allows you to collaborate closely with seasoned historians, mastering their techniques and research approaches. You'll expand your understanding of historical events and historical interpretation. Choose between the intensive one-year major research project (MRP) or the two-year thesis option.

Studying history provides essential insights into how societies evolved to their current state. It equips us to examine our identity, origins, and potential futures. Investigating the past is like solving an intellectual puzzle—rewarding, demanding, and thought-provoking.

From international field schools to archival research, from Indigenous community initiatives to digital history projects, UVic's history program delivers vibrant educational experiences that will profoundly impact you.

Our History department hosts a significant graduate program with about 60 students, 34 full-time faculty, and 29 emeritus/adjunct professors. Over the past ten years, 56 students have received SSHRC funding, while faculty have secured $5 million in research grants since 2000. Our Master's graduates have established successful careers in government, legal fields, business, research, and higher education, while our PhD alumni teach at institutions across Canada.
