The Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency (CILP) program aims to assist Indigenous communities in developing new adult speakers by offering comprehensive training in language acquisition techniques and methodologies that foster continued learning. This innovative certificate, provided by the University of Victoria's Department of Indigenous Education, is community-based, respects and incorporates local wisdom, and emphasizes practical communication skills.
The certificate serves as a standalone qualification or can lead to further studies through the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization and Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization programs. Every program iteration is collaboratively designed and managed with an Indigenous community partner.

completion of four years of full-time academic studies in which all language of instruction is English, at a high school or post-secondary institution in a recognized English-speaking country
High school diploma or equivalent (academic stream) with high-level results / minimum GPA 3.0 or equivalent
completion of Grade 12 English or its equivalent in Canada with a final grade of 86% or higher within the last three years prior to admission
a score of 86% or higher on the BC Provincial Grade 12 English Examination within the last three years prior to admission
a score of 4 or higher on the Advanced Placement Exam in English Language and Composition
a score of 4 or higher on IB Higher Level English A
