As international economic and cultural connections increasingly shrink our world, effective communication as global citizens grows ever more vital. Languages serve as gateways to understanding. Learning languages enhances not just communication abilities but also provides insight into the wider cultural and historical frameworks that shape our lives. Lakehead University's Language program cultivates communication mastery by offering a French major alongside opportunities to study: Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandarin, and Classical languages. In Canada's bilingual context, French proficiency (one of the nation's two official languages) often proves essential for career advancement. Mastering multiple languages—written, spoken, and literary—provides distinct personal and professional advantages.
Through the Department of Languages, you'll develop: Advanced French skills in reading, writing, and conversation, Cultural awareness, Creative communication techniques in dynamic learning settings, and Global perspectives on socio-cultural and literary themes. Prior French fluency isn't required—our curriculum supports language growth for all qualified students at every proficiency level.
