As international economic and cultural connections increasingly shrink our world, effective communication as global citizens grows ever more vital. Languages serve as gateways to understanding. Learning languages enhances not just communication abilities but also provides insight into the wider cultural and historical frameworks that shape our lives. Lakehead University's Language program cultivates communication mastery by offering a French major alongside opportunities to study: Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian, Ojibwe, Cree, Mandarin, and Classical languages. In Canada's bilingual context, French proficiency (one of the nation's two official languages) often proves essential for career advancement. Mastering multiple languages—written, spoken, and literary—provides distinct personal and professional advantages.
Through the Department of Languages, you'll develop: Advanced French skills in reading, writing, and conversation, Cultural awareness, Creative communication techniques in dynamic learning settings, and Global perspectives on socio-cultural and literary themes. Prior French fluency isn't required—our curriculum supports language growth for all qualified students at every proficiency level.

Qualification Requirements

Completion of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD),
or Completion of Grade 12 and the Secondary School Diploma,
A minimum of 6 Grade 12U or M courses, or equivalent, including program specific prerequisite courses,
A minimum 70%* overall final average
International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme applicants who achieve their diploma with a total score of at least 24 may be eligible for admission. Three Higher Level subjects must be completed. Prerequisite courses can be presented at either Standard Level or Higher Level. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Some of our competitive programs may require a total score greater than 24.

Successful graduation from an academic secondary school program or equivalent (For most countries, the same academic preparation as is required for university entrance in that country is required for consideration. Refer to Admission Requirements by Country.)

Minimum Score for Paper Based Test (pBT) when Speaking is present - 550 (no component score less than 50.
DuoLingo English Test - Minimum Score: 110
