Examine the enduring presence and resilience of Indigenous communities. Develop skills for collaborating effectively and respectfully with Indigenous groups and organizations. Integrate Indigenous knowledge systems with insights from various academic disciplines. Engage in cross-cultural learning experiences on campus, in local communities, and through land-based activities. This program welcomes both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students, with a mandatory field course component.
Indigenous studies offers a dynamic academic focus that prioritizes Indigenous knowledge systems and learning methods. Our curriculum investigates the social, political, cultural, and historical factors influencing Indigenous communities locally and globally.
The Major program places significant emphasis on hands-on and land-based educational approaches. Foundational courses introduce students to teaching methods, research approaches, and theoretical frameworks grounded in Indigenous knowledge systems.
To provide students with comprehensive, interdisciplinary understanding of key issues affecting Indigenous peoples in Canada, the program mandates completion of at least 1.5 upper-level units in each of these Breadth Areas: Arts, Literatures and Languages; Histories; Politics, Laws and Lands; Education; Health and Healing; and Community and Land-Based Learning.
