The University of Toronto's Philosophy Department holds the highest ranking among Canadian philosophy programs and stands among the world's most prestigious.
Our students have recently contributed articles to renowned journals including The Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Studies, Philosophical Quarterly, Analysis, British Journal for the History of Philosophy, and Philosophy of Science. The department provides graduate students with dedicated travel funding to showcase their research at major conferences like the American and Canadian Philosophical Association Meetings, the UK's Joint Session meetings, and specialized philosophy workshops worldwide.
Situated in Toronto's vibrant downtown, our department occupies a beautifully restored Art Deco building (the Jackman Humanities Institute), featuring dedicated student lounges and study areas. All admitted graduate students receive guaranteed financial assistance throughout their program duration. While full-time students can fulfill all MA philosophy requirements within two terms, we recommend taking no more than three courses during fall and winter sessions, completing remaining coursework in summer. The MA program also accommodates part-time students, who must finish degree requirements within five academic years.
Admission requires an appropriate bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Applicants must have a strong background in philosophy (roughly equivalent to an undergraduate major), with an average grade of at least a mid-B in the applicant's overall program and at least an A– in the applicant's philosophy courses.
Applicants whose primary language is not English and who graduated from a university where the language of instruction and examination was not English must complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with the following minimum scores:
Paper-based TOEFL exam: 600 and 5 on the Test of Written English (TWE).
Internet-based TOEFL exam: 100/120 and 22/30 on the writing and speaking sections.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Required score: 7.0 (Academic) with at least 6.5 for each component.
Equivalent results in some other recognized test of English-language proficiency are acceptable.
