Anthropology explores human unity and diversity, along with primate relatives, examining cultures and societies through comparative and global lenses. The University of Toronto has taught anthropological subjects for almost 150 years, with its Department of Anthropology formally created in 1936. This department has housed many leading figures in Canadian anthropology. Faculty members investigate contemporary and historical human societies, cultural practices, evolutionary origins, and closely related species. Graduate studies are available in sociocultural, medical, biological, linguistic, and archaeological anthropology.
At the master's level, the Department provides two graduate programs: Master of Arts and Master of Science. The Master of Arts covers all five anthropology sub-fields, while the Master of Science typically focuses on archaeology, medical, and evolutionary anthropology. Both programs start with comprehensive anthropological education before narrowing to specialized research, concluding with a focused thesis paper. Each admitted student receives guidance from an assigned Advisor.
