The JD/PhD (Criminology and Sociolegal Studies) Program enables students to integrate the formal study of law (including jurisprudence, doctrinal analysis, and legal theory) with an external examination of criminal justice and legal systems through social science methods and theoretical approaches. This dual-degree program delivers comprehensive training in both disciplines, producing graduates with strengthened abilities, broader perspectives, and greater potential for outstanding interdisciplinary research.
The combined JD/PhD program accelerates degree completion by allowing students to fulfill JD requirements and reach the dissertation phase of the PhD one year faster than pursuing the degrees separately. Candidates earn their JD by the fourth year while also completing PhD comprehensive exams. During the summer following year four, students finalize their dissertation proposals and achieve PhD candidacy. The doctoral dissertation can be completed in subsequent years. This collaborative program is administered by the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law and Department of Criminology and Sociolegal Studies.
