Statistical Science focuses on deriving insights from data. This field is fundamental to data science, integrating computational and statistical approaches for handling and interpreting extensive, intricate datasets. Statistical principles and techniques find utility across diverse domains including science, social sciences, public health, medicine, engineering, finance, technology, business, and government. Professionals in statistics and data science tackle challenges ranging from assessing climate change health impacts to forecasting wildfire trajectories, exploring genetic influences on health, and refining search algorithms. Innovations in data collection, organization, visualization, and analysis propel advancements across disciplines, fueling the need for skilled data specialists.
The Department of Statistical Sciences provides specialist, major, and minor programs in Statistics, along with a Data Science specialist program and Actuarial Science specialist and major programs (see the Actuarial Science section for details). Statistics curricula cover statistical techniques, theory, computational methods, and communication, preparing students to address real-world challenges. The Statistical Science: Theory and Methods specialist program focuses on mathematical foundations for data analysis, while the Statistical Science: Methods and Practice program prioritizes applied collaboration, combining statistical training with domain-specific knowledge. The Data Science specialist program, a collaboration with Computer Science, develops expertise in statistical analysis, big data algorithms, software engineering, and machine learning. The Statistics major offers flexible coursework, equipping students with versatile problem-solving skills, while the Statistics minor introduces statistical methods to complement quantitative studies in other fields.
