The School provides foundational programs in two disciplines: Environmental Science BSc Major and Minor, along with Environmental Studies BA Major and Minor. These programs are designed to complement studies in another related academic discipline. For instance, the Environmental Science Major pairs well with Majors like Environment & Health, Environmental Ethics, Earth and Environmental Systems, Environmental Geography, Forest Conservation Science, Physical & Environmental Geography, Biomedical Toxicology, Chemistry, Physics, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, or Environmental Biology. Similarly, the Environmental Studies Major can be combined with BA Majors such as Political Science, Economics, Women and Gender Studies, Human Geography, Forest Conservation, Architecture, or BSc Majors like Environmental Biology, Physics, or Forest Conservation Science. This dual-major approach equips students with both specialized expertise and broad interdisciplinary perspectives.
The Environmental Science BSc Major and Minor programs emphasize the multifaceted nature of environmental challenges, which often require insights from diverse scientific fields. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of scientific principles across physical and biological sciences, learning to integrate knowledge across different scales of space and time. Central to environmental science is the application of scientific methods to analyze and develop innovative solutions for environmental issues. The curriculum equips students with both specialized and interdisciplinary research skills essential for careers as environmental scientists.
The Environmental Studies BA Major and Minor are interdisciplinary programs tailored for students pursuing environmental careers within social sciences or humanities. These programs critically examine the economic, social, cultural, and political factors behind challenges like biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. By blending scientific literacy with advanced critical thinking, students learn to assess complex environmental issues and develop sustainable strategies for environmental protection and human well-being.
