The interdisciplinary programs are overseen by the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment, which provides student guidance and facilitates collaboration among participating departments, faculty, and programs.
The curriculum emphasizes the interconnected approach to environmental studies. Students will acquire essential problem-solving abilities for today's rapidly evolving environmental job sectors. Faculty members motivate students to engage in foundational research, critical analysis, interdisciplinary teamwork, and practical applications of environmental concepts.
The Environment programs start with ENV100Y5 (The Environment), a first-year Science course. These programs provide numerous hands-on learning experiences, including environmental research, fieldwork, and practical applications (such as ENV299Y5 Research Opportunity Program, ENV232H5 Environmental Sustainability Practicum, and ENV497H5 Environmental Research Project). Additionally, students may participate in work placement courses aligned with their interests (JEG400/401Y5 Geography/Environment Internship).
The Environmental Science programs enable students to explore interdisciplinary sciences crucial for addressing complex environmental challenges involving natural systems and human influences. Students can customize their scientific focus by selecting courses from three perspectives: Geographical and Earth Science, Biological/Ecological, and Physical/Chemical. For instance, one academic track might concentrate on ecosystem interactions, biogeochemical processes, and natural resource management, primarily drawing from Geographical and Ecological Perspectives. Alternatively, students with a passion for lab-based sciences can pursue an analytical track focused on environmental remediation and pollution control, emphasizing Physical and Chemical Sciences. Fieldwork, hands-on learning, and research are integral to all Environmental Science programs. Regardless of the chosen track, courses in Social and Policy Perspectives are included, ensuring that future scientists and technologists also grasp environmental governance and human-environment dynamics. Students uncertain about their academic path are advised to consult Program Advisors and Academic Counselors regularly.
