Chemistry offers a fulfilling intellectual journey and plays a pivotal role in advancing human civilization. It focuses on comprehending atomic and molecular structures and properties, applying this knowledge to explain and anticipate material behavior. Core principles from physics and mathematical techniques form chemistry's foundation, while its significance extends to diverse fields like astrophysics, life sciences, environmental studies, geology, materials science, and medicine. These interdisciplinary connections are evident in the Department's undergraduate curriculum.
The Department has recently implemented comprehensive updates to its courses and programs. These enhancements feature redesigned first-year instruction, adjusted upper-level courses, and revitalized all six specialized tracks: Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Synthetic & Catalytic Chemistry, and Chemical Physics. A new Environmental Chemistry major has also been introduced. Students in any specialization can pursue a Green Chemistry or Practical Chemical Analysis focus to showcase specialized expertise to future employers. Those enrolled in specialist programs may also participate in the Arts & Science Internship Program.
Environmental chemistry examines human-induced chemical changes in earth's systems. This program builds essential analytical skills for tracing organic and inorganic pollutants through air, water, soil, and living organisms. Combining core chemistry education with specialized environmental coursework, it allows students to tailor their studies through elective options. Many students pair this major with Environmental Science or life science programs from departments like Cell & Systems Biology or Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.
