Chemistry offers a fulfilling intellectual journey and plays a pivotal role in advancing human civilization. It focuses on comprehending atomic and molecular structures and properties, applying this knowledge to explain and forecast material behavior. Core principles from physics and mathematical techniques form chemistry's foundation. The discipline holds critical significance across diverse fields like astrophysics, life sciences, environmental studies, earth sciences, materials engineering, and medical research. These interdisciplinary connections are evident in the undergraduate curriculum developed by the Department.
The Department has significantly updated its academic offerings recently, including restructuring first-year instruction, adjusting upper-level courses, and revitalizing all six specialized programs: Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Synthetic & Catalytic Chemistry, and Chemical Physics. A newly introduced Environmental Chemistry major expands these options. Specialist or major students can pursue a Green Chemistry Focus or Practical Chemical Analysis Focus to showcase specialized expertise to future employers. Those in any specialist program qualify for the Arts & Science Internship Program pathway.
