The University of Toronto's Political Science program covers a broad spectrum of topics. Students can explore political philosophy, Canadian governance, global affairs, and the political systems of industrialized, developing, and transitioning nations. Numerous courses address cross-cutting themes like environmental policy, multiculturalism, conflict resolution, and global interconnectedness. The curriculum is structured to introduce beginners to Political Science fundamentals in first year, build core knowledge in second year, and offer specialized lectures and seminars for upper-level students. This field equips learners with essential social science foundations while examining critical issues affecting individuals, communities, nations, and the global community today. Beyond subject matter, Political Science classes emphasize developing strong writing and critical thinking abilities valuable for diverse professional paths.
Political Science coursework complements programs across social sciences and humanities, including Economics, Sociology, History, Philosophy, and Psychology. Those focusing on Canadian issues or urban challenges would benefit from cross-disciplinary studies, as would students concentrating on international relations or sustainability. Aspiring graduate students in social sciences should aim for foundational knowledge across these interconnected fields.
