History is a dynamic field that actively shapes our future while remaining a hotly debated political topic. Scholars examine bygone eras to comprehend them within their original context, uncover insights about our world's evolution, and impact contemporary society. Dictatorial governments frequently attempt to regulate historians' work - but what drives this suppression? Why do those seeking dominance over others dread historical knowledge so intensely? How can humanity's collective past inform our current global challenges?
Students of history acquire both comprehensive understanding of historical patterns and specialized expertise in particular regions, eras, or thematic concentrations. They explore how societal transformations, political doctrines, economic shifts, and environmental factors have interacted with human decisions to drive historical progress and create our modern reality. Our distinguished faculty members equip students with research techniques, critical reasoning abilities, and effective communication skills. Learners discover historical methodology, including evidence evaluation and the selection of theoretical approaches.
Our department provides Specialist, Major, and Minor degree options, plus a Law and History concentration for Majors and Specialists that serves as ideal preparation for legal studies. Qualified students may participate in the Arts & Science Internship Program in History (ASIP). Alumni apply their historical training across diverse sectors including law, public service, education, cultural institutions, media, urban development, and numerous other professional fields.
