This program equips students with essential knowledge and understanding of key French studies areas: language, grammar, linguistics, literature, and culture.
The French curriculum offers:
for language learners, ongoing practice to develop proficiency in written and spoken French, along with listening and reading skills,
for translation students, specialized training in techniques, strategies, and cross-cultural awareness between French and English,
for linguistics students, comprehensive study of French phonetics, syntax, semantics, and their societal connections,
for future French teachers, emphasis on educational theory and effective teaching methods,
for literature enthusiasts, foundational tools for literary analysis and exposure to diverse francophone works across genres and eras,
for culture students, exploration of francophone societies through historical, political, philosophical, and artistic lenses.
Most French programs start with FREA01H3 Language Practice I, reinforcing prior knowledge and serving as a gateway to advanced courses for non-native speakers. Designed for students with Grade 12 French or equivalent, FREA01H3 requires all first-time University of Toronto French students to complete a placement test (details below) before enrollment. The program also offers study abroad opportunities for academic credit. For information on external study options and Letters of Permission, consult the Studying at Other Universities website and contact our Undergraduate Assistant.
