The School of the Environment serves as a cutting-edge interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Arts & Science, uniting and amplifying the vast array of environmental education and research capabilities across the Faculty. It creates pathways for cross-disciplinary environmental research and academic pursuits, bridging the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
The School provides foundational programs in two key disciplines: Environmental Science BSc Major and Minor, and Environmental Studies BA Major and Minor. These programs are designed to complement additional studies in related fields. For instance, the Environmental Science Major pairs well with Majors in Environment & Health, Environmental Ethics, Earth and Environmental Systems, Environmental Geography, Forest Conservation Science, Physical & Environmental Geography, Biomedical Toxicology, Chemistry, Physics, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, or Environmental Biology. Similarly, the Environmental Studies Major can be combined with BA Majors like Political Science, Economics, Women and Gender Studies, Human Geography, Forest Conservation, Architecture, or BSc Majors such as Environmental Biology, Physics, or Forest Conservation Science. These academic pathways equip students with both specialized expertise and broad interdisciplinary perspectives. The Environmental Science BSc Major and Minor programs address the multifaceted nature of environmental challenges, which often require insights from diverse scientific fields. Students gain comprehensive knowledge across scientific disciplines and develop the ability to synthesize principles from physical and biological sciences at various scales. Fundamentally, environmental science focuses on analyzing and innovatively addressing environmental issues, equipping students with both specialized and interdisciplinary research skills essential for professional environmental scientists.
The Environmental Studies BA Major and Minor programs cater to students pursuing environmental careers within social sciences or humanities. These programs provide in-depth academic exploration of the economic, social, cultural, and political factors behind challenges like biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate change. Their interdisciplinary framework ensures scientific literacy while honing critical thinking abilities, enabling students to assess complex environmental issues and develop sustainable solutions for enhanced ecological and societal well-being.
