Theatre, Drama, and Performance Studies explores the dynamic interplay between playwrights crafting scripts, performers bringing those texts to life, and the audiences engaging with the final production. This discipline investigates both the theatrical experience and the creative processes behind it. From ancient Greek theater to contemporary experimental works, the field encompasses the analysis of plays, performers, venues, designers, and spectators. At U of T Mississauga, academic and extracurricular activities center around two key spaces: the Erindale Studio Theatre, home to Theatre Erindale productions and Drama Club performances, and the Multi-Media Studio Theatre (MiST), used for instructional and extracurricular presentations across programs.
Dramaturgy and Drama Studies (DDS) bridges artistic and academic approaches to theater with a focus on dramaturgical practice. Alongside specialized courses in production dramaturgy, the curriculum covers theater history, dramatic texts, critical analysis, scriptwriting, devised theater, and multimedia performance. DDS combines rigorous academic training with hands-on learning opportunities, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge through practical projects. All coursework occurs at U of T Mississauga (UTM), with external courses requiring prior approval from the Drama Studies Director and Undergraduate Advisor for credit consideration.
