Anthropology explores humanity, examining our origins, evolution, and diverse cultural expressions. This discipline investigates human experiences through both biological and cultural lenses, adopting a broad perspective. What sets anthropology apart is its comparative, historical methodology and its connections to both natural sciences and humanities. It analyzes societies across time—from isolated communities to advanced civilizations and modern global networks.
Through this comprehensive view, anthropology seeks to identify universal human traits while explaining cultural variations and societal transformations.
Given its expansive scope, anthropology branches into four specialized areas: Socio-cultural Anthropology, Evolutionary Anthropology, Linguistic Anthropology, and Archaeology. Currently, the University of Toronto Scarborough focuses on two primary concentrations: Socio-cultural and Evolutionary Anthropology. The program includes select Linguistic Anthropology courses aligned with Socio-cultural studies, and some Archaeology coursework connected to Evolutionary studies.
