This doctoral program provides candidates with avenues for in-depth scholarship, innovative investigation, and conceptual examination within Social Justice Education. Primarily tailored for individuals pursuing academic research and teaching careers, the flexible-time PhD option caters to working professionals seeking to balance employment with doctoral studies in their field. Both flexible-time and full-time PhD tracks maintain identical academic requirements. Flexible-time doctoral candidates maintain full-time enrollment for the initial four years before transitioning to part-time status for remaining program duration.
Housed within OISE's Department of Social Justice Education, the program fosters critical engagement with education's multifaceted contexts—social, historical, cultural, political, economic, and ethical. Drawing from humanities and social science traditions, the department champions interdisciplinary approaches to educational equity and justice, incorporating historical, philosophical, sociological, and pedagogical perspectives. Faculty and students explore diverse areas including anti-oppression frameworks, critical race scholarship, Indigenous knowledge systems, media studies, feminist theory, class analysis, francophone perspectives, postcolonial theory, queer studies, disability justice, educational philosophy, and democratic theory—either through interdisciplinary lenses or traditional disciplinary methodologies.
