The Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Studies is a research-focused graduate program designed for scholars exploring various disciplines within the department. These include adult and community learning with social activism, civic engagement and human rights, professional development education, cultural dynamics, critical diversity studies and gender research, academic administration and policy, theories of knowledge acquisition, moral philosophy, educational equality (considering factors like race, ability, gender, socioeconomic status, and sexual orientation), Indigenous learning systems, global education comparisons, media studies and cultural representation, as well as childhood and adolescent development across educational, familial, and societal contexts.

The program mandates participation in two introductory doctoral seminars during the first year and an advanced seminar in the second year. Remaining coursework is tailored through faculty advisement. PhD candidates generally allocate two years to completing academic requirements, followed by two to four years dedicated to designing and executing an innovative research initiative that advances understanding in their chosen field of study.
