The PhD program features core requirements alongside customizable options, allowing students to craft an educational journey that aligns with their individual learning objectives and research focus. Students can explore their chosen field through diverse theoretical lenses and varying depths of study. The curriculum empowers learners to leverage faculty expertise while designing a course of study that reflects their background, academic passions, career goals, and professional ambitions. Additionally, the program actively supports involvement in multiple interdisciplinary graduate collaborative specializations offered through the University of Toronto.
The doctoral journey progresses through clearly defined stages, each marked by specific academic achievements that students typically complete sequentially within established timeframes. These phases—supervised by the PhD Program Director—include selecting a supervisor and advisory committee, fulfilling coursework requirements, passing the qualifying exam, defending the research proposal, and successfully presenting the dissertation (both at departmental and School of Graduate Studies levels). Full-time candidates should aim to finish within four to five years, while flex-time students may extend their studies up to eight years, provided they submit an adjusted timeline for approval by both their supervisor and the Program Director.
