The Department of Medical Biophysics is a multidisciplinary unit renowned for its pioneering work in cancer studies and broader biomedical fields. Based at leading institutions like the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Sunnybrook Research Institute, and SickKids Research Institute, it provides graduate programs culminating in MSc and PhD degrees. This innovative program bridges biology, physics, clinical medicine, and engineering, offering a contemporary curriculum and exceptional research opportunities.
Within our PhD track, candidates undertake thesis research while following a specialized medical physics course sequence. This intensive program exposes students to clinical technologies used in medical imaging - including CT scans, MRI, nuclear medicine - and radiation treatment. Current investigations explore advanced areas like AI applications, theranostics, and particle beam therapies. Participants develop both research expertise and leadership capabilities.
With vast amounts of data continuously generated, researchers face the challenge of extracting meaningful insights. Medical Biophysics specialists employ mathematical, statistical, and computational approaches to interpret complex datasets spanning genomics, proteomics, cellular analysis, and medical imaging. Much of the department's current work focuses on creating analytical models and algorithms to decipher biological systems, particularly for disease diagnosis and therapeutic development.
