The Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology graduate program delivers a comprehensive curriculum and multidisciplinary research opportunities focused on human disease mechanisms, culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Our department features outstanding research training initiatives that explore the fundamental nature and molecular basis of human diseases. More than 130 faculty members across campus and affiliated teaching hospitals conduct cutting-edge research, teach pathobiology courses, and mentor PhD and MSc candidates. We foster a distinctive academic atmosphere that promotes collaboration between clinicians, researchers, and students, enabling trainees to comprehend how breakthroughs in both basic and clinical research translate into improved approaches for treating human diseases.
Pathogens including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites pose significant challenges to public health systems in Canada and worldwide. Our investigators employ state-of-the-art microbiological, biochemical, immunological, and biophysical methods to elucidate critical models of microbial pathogenesis. Research spans diverse areas from molecular studies of antibiotic resistance in bacteria and malarial infections to viral replication processes and immune responses against pathogens. This wide-ranging expertise is essential for advancing novel interventions like vaccines, antibody therapies, treatments, and diagnostic tools.
