The Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) provides two academic programs: a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy. IHPST engages in research, delivers advanced study programs, and acts as a hub for university-wide engagement in its discipline. Graduate students from all fields can enroll in courses, which serve as valuable supplements for both science and humanities specialists. Participants attend IHPST colloquia, welcoming the entire University of Toronto community.
The Doctor of Philosophy degree is designed for individuals pursuing careers in academia, research, or other fields requiring advanced scholarly expertise.
IHPST offers two full-time PhD options: a 4-year program and a direct-entry 5-year program, along with a flex-time PhD option. Upon admission, PhD candidates receive a supervisor who provides guidance on course selection, program development, and funding opportunities. The supervisor also helps assemble an Advisory Committee (comprising the supervisor and two IHPST faculty members) to support students during their qualifying year (year 2 of the 4-year program or year 3 of the 5-year program). Additionally, supervisors submit annual progress reports tracking each student's academic journey.
A University of Toronto master's degree in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology or its equivalent from a recognized university with an average grade of at least an A– in the applicant's program and with no individual grade less than B+. While the majority of accepted students exceed this standard, the very broad scope of the field and the variety of fruitful approaches to it also imply that many different backgrounds are appropriate. Accordingly, grades are only one criterion used to judge applicants.
