Our ECE graduate students stand out for their creativity and analytical skills, with nearly 90% of our department's annual invention disclosures including student contributions. Numerous students earn prestigious awards from organizations like NSERC and CIHR. In the past year, research-focused students secured over $12.5 million in funding, while our favorable 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio fosters strong mentorship connections. Graduates emerge prepared to excel across diverse sectors, from engineering to business, healthcare, law, and beyond.
The PhD program enables students to gain specialized expertise in their chosen discipline, requiring dedication to advancing knowledge through original research. Alongside faculty-supervised investigations, candidates complete coursework and a qualifying exam. The program is designed for completion within four years, with guaranteed financial support for students making satisfactory progress. PhD candidates are expected to disseminate their findings through publications in leading international journals and conferences.
Admission may be granted for applicants with a University of Toronto master's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with an overall average of at least B+, or its equivalent from a recognized university.
The department must be satisfied of the student's ability to do advanced research before admission may be granted.
