Biochemistry explores the molecular mechanisms driving biological activities, serving as a foundational science for all fields involving living organisms. The biochemistry graduate program offers students access to state-of-the-art research facilities, pursuing Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees across diverse specializations. These include examining structure-function relationships in proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and complex systems like membranes and cellular organelles.
As a pivotal field in pharmaceutical development, biochemistry drives medicinal breakthroughs. Certain researchers employ high-throughput screening of synthetic compound libraries to identify potential drug candidates. Meanwhile, others isolate and analyze bioactive molecules from environmental microbes, yielding compounds with antibiotic, antifungal, and anticancer properties. Another key research area leverages structural biology expertise, examining both normal and mutated disease-related proteins to uncover how genetic and acquired abnormalities contribute to illness.
