The Department of Sociology provides both thesis and non-thesis options for students pursuing a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Sociology, along with a thesis-focused Ph.D. program. Each student's curriculum is tailored to their specific academic goals, blending foundational coursework in sociological theory and research methods with specialized electives in their chosen field.
With a moderate enrollment size, the department fosters close collaboration between students and faculty. Currently, 50 graduate students are enrolled across M.A. and Ph.D. programs, supported by 19 research-active faculty members. Key research areas among our faculty include:
Citizenship, migration, racial studies, and ethnic relations
Criminology and justice systems
Healthcare and medical sociology
Indigenous communities and cultures
Sustainable development, agricultural studies, and environmental issues
Science education and knowledge production
Family dynamics and religious studies
The University of Saskatchewan's Sociology Department offers a vibrant research environment. Graduate students have access to dedicated office spaces adjacent to computer labs and can participate in diverse research initiatives through the Social Sciences Research Laboratories and Saskatchewan Data Research Centre.
