The Department of Plant Sciences provides students with an exceptional opportunity through its research-focused M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs covering agronomy, crop science, horticultural science, plant ecology, and rangeland studies within a single department. As Canada's sole plant sciences department, we deliver a comprehensive educational approach to botanical studies.
Our department operates from the cutting-edge Agriculture Building, which features 180 research labs and a 30,000 square foot controlled environment facility. Nearby, you'll find 25,000 square feet of greenhouse space just a short walk away. Our plant research encompasses 1,979 hectares of dedicated land, with the recently established Grains Innovation Quality Lab enhancing our focus on value-added quality characteristics.
Fully incorporated into our department, the Crop Development Center stands as a premier institution for crop breeding. Since 1971, its initiatives have successfully produced more than 350 crop varieties.
Beyond traditional master's and doctoral programs, we provide a unique dual Ph.D. degree in partnership with Japan's United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences. This innovative program requires students to complete one thesis under the guidance of two supervisors (one from each institution) and a joint committee, spending roughly equal time at both locations. Successful candidates earn separate Ph.D. degrees in plant science from both universities.
