The Certificate in Indigenous Storytelling Studies is an interdisciplinary program that acknowledges specialized knowledge in analyzing both oral and written Indigenous storytelling traditions across Canada, along with the cultural knowledge systems embedded within these narratives.
This program examines Indigenous stories and literature through multiple cultural lenses and academic viewpoints. Key learning areas include:
exploring historical and contemporary Indigenous storytelling practices through specific cultural case studies
understanding the knowledge frameworks embedded in storytelling traditions, including proper protocols
examining how traditional storytelling methods have evolved for modern media formats (such as literature, poetry, theater, films, etc.)
analyzing the significant influence of diverse storytelling and documentation approaches
Though this isn't a storytelling performance certificate, students may discover avenues for developing their own storytelling skills.
