The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is a four-year undergraduate program tailored for Indigenous students pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree. Established in 1972, ITEP stands as Canada's most extensive teacher training initiative specifically created for First Nations communities. This comprehensive program equips future educators with the skills to address the cultural requirements of Indigenous learners, their communities, and partners. ITEP provides a supportive, community-focused learning environment guided by experienced faculty, Elders, knowledge keepers, and advisors.
ITEP's impact is evident through its accomplished alumni network spanning four decades. Graduates have assumed prominent positions in education, school leadership, and both Indigenous and mainstream governance systems. Many have played pivotal roles in developing culturally relevant learning experiences for younger generations, realizing the vision of Indigenous-led education. This program will:
equip you with intercultural competencies to navigate diverse educational environments successfully.
strengthen cultural understanding and self-identity, enabling you to help students value their ancestral traditions.
offer hands-on teaching experience through extended practicums in First Nations schools.
