The Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is a four-year undergraduate program tailored for Indigenous students pursuing a Bachelor of Education degree. Established in 1972, ITEP stands as Canada's most extensive teacher training initiative specifically created for First Nations communities. This comprehensive program equips future educators with the skills to address the cultural requirements of Indigenous students, their communities, and educational partners. ITEP adopts a nurturing, community-focused model for higher learning, drawing on the knowledge of faculty members, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and support staff.
ITEP's impact is evident through its accomplished alumni network spanning four decades. Graduates have assumed prominent positions in education, school leadership, and both Indigenous and mainstream governance structures. Many former students have played pivotal roles in developing culturally relevant learning experiences for younger generations, realizing the vision of Indigenous-led education. This program will:
equip you with skills to navigate diverse cultural environments and address potential challenges.
strengthen cultural understanding and self-identity, enabling you to help students value their traditions.
offer hands-on teaching experience through extended practicums in First Nations schools.
