The Department of Theatre provides a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program specializing in Theatre Directing.
This MFA in directing concentrates on modern theatrical direction, enabling students to refine their directing abilities while exploring both English and French theatrical traditions within a bilingual environment. The curriculum prepares graduates for professional directing careers in theater.
Theoretical classes introduce students to modern artistic and cultural discussions, helping them situate their practical work within current artistic trends and academic research. Each year, students take two Theory courses along with a distinctive Professional Internship, where they gain experience at local arts organizations or with established artists. Our Art History and Theory faculty, including adjunct professors, actively engage in research, publishing, and curatorial initiatives spanning topics like gender in art, post-colonial studies, museology critiques, and archival practices in contemporary art.

Situated in Ottawa's vibrant downtown, the University's Visual Arts Department neighbors premier Canadian cultural institutions. Just steps away are the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa Art Gallery, SAW Video, and Karsh-Masson Gallery, with nearby access to the Canadian Museum of History, Library and Archives Canada, plus Gatineau's AxeNéo7 Gallery and Daïmôn media arts center. These capital region venues showcase exceptional collections, major exhibitions, artist talks, and top-tier research resources.
