The School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies provides these academic programs: Master of Arts (MA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in sociology, along with a Master of Arts (MA) in anthropology. The School also contributes to these joint programs: women's studies at the master's level and Canadian studies at the doctoral level.
The sociology MA program is available both full-time and part-time, with instruction in French and English. For English admissions, yearly intake limits follow the guidelines outlined in the "Admission Requirements" section. Following University of Ottawa policy, students may complete assignments, research papers, theses, and exams in either English or French.
The master's program features five pathways: the thesis-based MA, the research paper MA (both of which may include co-op opportunities), and a course-based option that incorporates French immersion. Additionally, two microprograms are available: Advanced Qualitative and Quantitative Data Analysis, and Professional Methodology Applications. Those pursuing thesis or research paper options may also enroll in the collaborative feminist and gender studies program.
Faculty members at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies pursue diverse research interests. To fully grasp the scope of ongoing research, prospective students should review faculty profiles and their specialized fields, which cover areas beyond those highlighted here.
Students who have a BA with honours or major in sociology or in another equivalent discipline, with a minimum average of 70% (B) calculated in accordance with graduate studies guidelines, may be admitted to the MA program.
In the case of the master’s with thesis or with major research paper options, students who have an honours BA in another discipline with a minimum average of 70 per cent (B), calculated in accordance with graduate studies guidelines, but without sufficient background, may be accepted into a qualifying program, requiring them to complete a maximum of eight courses.
