The School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies provides these academic programs: Master of Arts (MA) and PhD in sociology, along with a Master of Arts (MA) in anthropology. The School also contributes to these joint initiatives: women's studies at the master's level and Canadian studies at the doctoral level.
The sociology MA program is available both full-time and part-time, with instruction in French and English. For English programs, annual admission limits follow the guidelines outlined in the "Admission Requirements" section. Following University of Ottawa policy, students may complete assignments, research papers, theses, and exams in either English or French.
The master's program features five pathways: the thesis-based MA, the research paper MA (both with potential co-op options), and a course-based option that includes French immersion. Additionally, two microprograms are available: Advanced Qualitative and Quantitative Data Analysis, and Professional Methodology Applications. Thesis or research paper students may also enroll in the feminist and gender studies collaborative program.
Faculty members at the School of Sociological and Anthropological Studies pursue diverse research interests. To fully grasp the scope of ongoing research, students should review faculty profiles and their specialized areas, which cover far more ground than the research fields mentioned here.
